According to Wikipedia, Dyslexia is a broad term defining a learning disability that impairs a person's ability to read, and which can manifest itself as a difficulty with phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, and/or rapid naming.
I saw this movie titled Taare Zameen Par that explores the life and imagination of eight-year-old Ishaan. Although he excels in the arts, his poor academic performance leads his parents to send him to a boarding school. Ishaan's new art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh suspects that he is dyslexic, and helps him to overcome his disability.
In one of the scenes, Nikumbh visits Ishaan's house. Ishaan's father is very upset at Ishaan not doing well at school and he believes that Ishaan is just up to no good and is hence not studying. He fails to realize that his son is dyslexic and that is the real reason he isn't able to pick up things in class. This is when Nikumbh picks up a toy box that has Japanese text on it and demands that Ishaan's father read it. When he is obviously unable to read it, Nikumbh berates him saying that he is just fooling them. He thus, tries to make Ishaan's parents understand the plight that their son has to suffer day in and day out.
This story was really touching and this scene really helped me understand what it might feel like to be dyslexic.
We often try to make stuff that can be consumed by 90-95% of the people out there. I have come to think that the remaining 5-10% have no reason to be left out for no fault of theirs. This is why I would urge every reader to try and make their web-site (and any other online or printed property or asset) dyslexia friendly. I've posted some links below to that effect.
It's really simple to get started. Just try and follow the instructions in the links below and you will be closer to making your web-site accessible to a dyslexic.
